Alone - Getting a Feel for Things

The Team and I have been tirelessly working on Alone, and I think it’s time to share a few details -

Alone is a first person, sci-fi survival horror game being built in Unreal Engine 4. The player, who takes control of Travis Drake, a military maintenance officer, must survive on a spaceship overrun by its mutated crew. The game is open world but with a linear quest-line that sees the player search for a means of escape.

In the survival horror fashion, the player is afforded limited offensive / defensive capabilities, and so must tread carefully, using the ship’s maintenance and ventilation shafts to bypass and escape enemies. Those same enemies however will be fully capable of traversing the environment just as well as the player, meaning there will be few safe havens throughout the entirety of the vessel. Our programmers are working on making them as intelligent as possible. Most recently they have been working on making them sensitive to player instigated sounds such as gunfire.

Our artists have been tasked with creating the ship’s interior and the assets that will be used to fill it out. Everything from cryo chambers and computer terminals to crates and chairs are being modeled in Autodesk Maya 2016. As it is our intent to present the ship as a first generation space exploratory vessel, the environment will look and feel typically human, maintaining features of modern technology and space crafts.

I personally have been blueprinting the layout of the ship, ensuring consistency in design and architectural accuracy, and working to provide the player with multiple routes to traverse any given area. Once complete, I will be populating the environment with assets and experimenting with lighting to create an interesting an aesthetically pleasing game world.
